Biography

From the age of 17 Owen has occupied some of the most prestigious orchestral positions in London. He was appointed Principle Tuba to the Fine Arts Brass Ensemble in 1980. Owen left the ensemble in 1986 to join the London Philharmonic Orchestra and then joined London Brass in 1997. He now resides with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
       Owen also embarks on a full calendar of freelance work. This has provided him with the opportunity to play with a number of orchestras and ensembles across the world. These have included the London Symphony Orchestra, London Sinfonietta, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra, The Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and The Moscow Philharmonic. 

Owen attended the Royal College of Music between 1981-85 studying under John Jenkins and John Fletcher. Ten years later, after grounding a successful career, Owen rejoined the Royal College, this time as a professor of Tuba. In the following decade Owen’s career has flourished. Arguably the highlight of his career came in the form of Tuba Concerto “Cry of Anubis”, written by Sir Harrison Birtwistle specifically for Owen. The World Premier took place at.....in 1995 and was performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra. The Concerto has subsequently been performed by the City of Birmingham Symphony and RTE Orchestras. Owen’s performances have consistently been described as “awesome and masterful”, ( - International Tuba and Euphonium association). (Listen to an excerpt of of Cry Of Anubis HERE)

From solo, to film and television work, Owen has played at the highest levels; he has had the privilege of collaborating with artists such as Joni Mitchell, Herbie Hancock, Peter Erskine and Vince Mendoza. Owen has played on countless film scores including; Gladiator, Lord of the Rings, the Harry Potter movies and Mission Impossible. (See a full list of Owen’s credits HERE)
